  • Renewal in Revelation - Interview with Paul Mallard
Paul Mallard is the Director of Training and Development of the Midlands Gospel Partnership and former pastor of Woodgreen Evangelical Church in Worcester. Paul served as President of the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches (FIEC) from 2004 to 2007. He is married to Edrie; they have four children and two grandchildren. He has a great affection for Birmingham, where he was born and brought up, and is a keen West Bromwich Albion supporter. He believes that training a new generation of Christian leaders is very important.

  • The Commentary - Church with walls
As pastor I get teased sometimes that it seems harder to become a member of our church than it is to get into heaven. With a smile I reply that, sadly, that is probably true. The reason is that, whereas the Lord Jesus can see into people's hearts and so know for certain who is really his, we mere mortals can't. So, persuaded that we should be aiming at a church membership made up of real Christians, the leadership listens to people's stories of how they came to Christ and looks for signs of genuine godliness and obedience to Christ and his commands. Obviously, we can't guarantee we always get it right, but, with God's help, we do our best.

  • The Music Exchange - Battle in the bands?
I've been dwelling on one of the questions posed to the panel at the last London Music Ministry Conference. The question was (as far as I remember) about the fact that we hadn't used the organ or the grand piano during the day, and what the future holds for those two instruments.

  • Cohabiting then converted? - Don Carson's advice on whether or not they should marry
The following post was first an email to a young church planter seeking counsel. He is planting a church in a rough area. Not a few of those who are getting converted have been living together, sometimes with children, sometimes for years, without getting married. His question, then, is what should be said to these couples where one of the pair gets converted, and the other, so far, does not. Should the advice be to get married? Or is that encouraging people to be unequally yoked?

  • Monthly media and arts column - The rockstar physicist
There is nothing that is more guaranteed to make a normal rational person feel stupid than hearing someone talk knowledgably about particle physics. Since many physicists are actually very kind people, they often try really hard to find ways to communicate tricky science to the rest of us. Some of them are creative and artistic too, which is a real bonus, and so we get valuable avenues of understanding like Tom Stoppard's plays and Douglas Adams's novels. These have the useful function of making us laugh and feel thoroughly entertained while terribly difficult ideas about things like the space-time continuum creep into our consciousness via the back door.

  • The Lord's supper - A helpful acronym to aid biblical understanding
For many, the arrival of the communion cup or the offer of bread can generate feelings of confusion and frustration in not knowing what to 'do' or how to 'take' the bread and the wine in a reverent and helpful way. A biblical understanding is of great benefit here.

  • The Third Degree - What students get up to during those long summers
The summer holiday is definitely one of the perks of student life; months without coursework deadlines or exams, but does student ministry take a break too? With many students going home, travelling or working, it may appear that there isn't much opportunity to reach the student world with the good news about Jesus. But things aren't always what they seem...

  • Blind faith? - Growing up blind
I was born blind, without eyes. This came as a great shock to my parents, but, despite this, and their questions as to why God had allowed this to happen, they were determined to treat me as normally as possible. I was included in all family activities, and I went through mainstream education all the way from playschool to sixth form. It was a challenge, but, with help from God and friends, family and staff, I got through it.
