Page 1 of 3 BackgroundThe unifying theme of the Bible is the Kingdom of God; although the term is not used in the OT, the concept is present throughout. (The Kingdom of God is expressed in covenant [God’s promises/relationship] and in redemption [God’s deliverances/saving acts].) Understanding this theme will help us to understand any part of the Bible correctly. God’s plan is to establish the Kingdom of God - the Bible is the account of what God has done, is doing and will do to bring that about. In Study 2 we saw the promise of the Kingdom: that Abraham’s descendants were to be God’s special people, living in a promised land and being a special blessing to all nations: “God’s people in God’s place under God’s rule.” Summary: Abraham’s descendants will possess the land, be God’s special people and be the instrument of blessing to many nations. But the path to the blessing is not a smooth one. It takes a miracle for Abraham to have even one son when he has been promised a nation! We see the wickedness of Abraham’s descendants, particularly in Jacob and his sons. Although God promised the land of Canaan to his descendants, and he was already living there, the promise is not to be fulfilled easily or quickly. This shows us the importance and necessity of faith.
